LED drivers can be generally put into two main categories, direct and dot matrix. The first, shown on the left hand side are the direct LED drivers. Direct drivers are very common and can either source or sink the current driving the connected LEDs. This type of driver is ideal if a high LED current is required or if a very limited amount of channels are required. The other type of drivers shown on the right hand side are ideal if relatively low LED current is required. This type of drivers is called dot matrix drivers and comes in two types: commonly known as multiplexing and crossplexing. Dot matrix drivers have in common that they include source and sinks for driving the LEDs. They allow driving a higher number of LEDs with less LED driver ICs required than with direct LED drivers. The difference between those two types of dot matrix drivers will be explained on the following slides.
