The combination of oversampling and noise shaping can yield extremely high values of SNR. Data is presented for first, second, and third-order modulator loops. However, modulators greater than second-order do not obey a linear model, and become more difficult to design and stabilize. Modulators as high as 6-th order have been successfully designed. In many cases, however, the multi-bit approach is used to achieve high SNRs, rather than high-order modulators.
