High Power LED Driving Solutions - ZXLD1350 Slide 10

When choosing an actual inductor there several things you need to look for. Once you have determined the inductance you can quickly detail the device to use based on the customer’s requirements. Size is a factor. In general, the smaller the inductance the higher the DC current rating for a given space volume. You will need a saturated current rating that is 1.3X the average LED current (hysteretic comparator triggers on ±15% of the average LED current). Remember not all inductor manufacturers specify the current rating the same. Some state the value when the inductance drops by 10%, some when it drops by 50%. Also, inductance drops off with increasing temperature. If the core saturates it will heat up and the switching regulator will not operate correctly; heat dissipation will increase and efficiency will decrease. To minimize radiated electrical noise, use a screened inductor. This is likely to be bigger and more expensive.
