CFP was released in 2009 to support long reach 40G and 100G Ethernet applications. The CFP interconnect system is designed for use with CFP compliant optical modules for longer links as required for optical transport and telecom applications. The 148 position connector interface features 10 high speed channels capable of up to 12Gb/s per channel, and is designed for excellent signal integrity. The CFP system includes hardware for guidance of the optical module and EMI containment. A heatsink is also offered, which is screwed to the rails and spring-loaded to remain in contact with the module surface. A straddle mount plug connector is applied to the module board to mate with the host board receptacle. This allows tighter positioning of the 148 contacts over the other pluggable interfaces that use pads on the mating plug board as contacts.
