MPD Coin Cell Battery HoldersMemory Protection Devices has pioneered a large number of new styles of coin cell battery holders to suit the various needs of the electronics industry. Our coin cell battery holders provide an excellent solution to save space on a crowded board and can offer more reliable connections while also having simple, tool-less battery replacements. We continue to provide new technology to the traditional style of coin cell battery holders for increased reliability. Although we already have the most robust patent portfolio of battery holder technologies in the world, we are always finding new additions for it. Mini Coin Cell Holders
![]() Minis are built for reliability, with gold-flashed, nickel-plated phosphor bronze contacts that resist corrosion. The dual pressure contacts offer low electrical resistance and resistance to intermittent connections, while the recurved positive contacts provide extra retention on the coin cell battery. The lightweight LCP base piece of the holder is extremely strong, and can easily withstand temperatures of up to 280°C for modern, lead-free reflow soldering. Additionally, the LCP has excellent chemical resistance and can withstand repeated sterilizations by standard methods used in medical device assembly, including gamma and electron beam, ethylene oxide, and hot steam or hot air processes. The LCP used is also halogen-, PFOS-, and PFOA-free, as well as SVHC, REACH, RoHS, and WEEE compliant – meaning that Minis meet global environmental regulations.
Snap Dragon Coin Cell Holders
Ever since MPD invented the first coin cell holder, we have been reinventing it with newer and newer designs to meet the ever evolving electronics industry. The Snap Dragon is the latest of these, with new features to address increased demands. After the cover has been snapped on, the coin cell is completely locked in, and the Snap Dragon provides an excellent and reliable connection. Shocks, vibrations, and drops do little to dislodge the cell, or even cause intermittent connections. However, the cover can still be removed in a snap, allowing for quick and easy battery replacements. The LCP base is fully tolerant of high temperature reflow soldering processes, while the polypropylene cover is strong, and flexible enough to allow many battery replacements without any issues. Amazingly, the Snap Dragon holders are able to provide all of these benefits while keeping a very low profile, typically adding only 1 mm of total height to the height of the coin cell battery above the PCB. Although we already have the most robust patent portfolio of battery holder technologies in the world, we are always finding new additions for it. The Snap Dragon is currently a patented technology and is the newest addition! Click here for more information on the Solder Lug CR2032 Battery Holder
Energizer® is a registered trademark of Eveready Battery Company, Inc. and is used with permission. GlidersMPD offers a new category of battery holders for lithium coin cell batteries. “Gliders” are a hybrid type, combining the low cost of retainers with high reliability. They are particularly suitable for handheld consumer and medical products, electronic cards, electronic toll tags, single-use devices, alarm systems, main boards, PNDs and RFID. Utilizing a special plastic tray that secures the coin cell and glides easily into the nickel-plated phosphor bronze retainer, the battery is protected from polarity reversal and is assured uninterrupted contact. Retainers come with PC pins or can be surface mounted and are easy to solder. Additionally, they provide shock and vibration resistance.

Coin Cell Battery Retainers
Coin cell retainers are metal contacts that both electrically connect coin cells and hold them in place, while taking up minimal additional space on the PCB. They feature nickel-plating, and since most coin cells have nickel shells this helps to prevent galvanic corrosion, an electrochemical process that can damage dissimilar metals that are in electrical contact. Our retainers are always designed with automation in mind, and can be easily picked and placed, with both through hole and surface mount retainers available for most coin cell sizes. Combining the ease of automation with the low cost of MPD's retainers, it is no wonder they are such a popular product.
Surface Mount Coin Cell Battery HolderMPD and DigiKey introduce a high performance Liquid Crystal Polymer Surface Mount Coin Cell Battery Holder with exceptional strength
The model BU2032SM-HD-G has 30% better shock resistance than previous models and is designed for medical equipment and hand held portable devices requiring high reliability. This holder is manufactured with DuPont Zenite, a high performance liquid crystal polymer. The plastic is ultra light weight with exceptional strength and rated for greater than 300°C. Dual beam positive and negative contacts are gold plated phosphor bronze with low contact resistance. In addition these contacts feature sliding wipe action for a reliable connection. The positive contact force exceeds 500g against the battery providing intermittent free operation. Designed for automation and packaged in tape and reel for quick placement, standards 13" reels are made to EIA-481 specifications and hold 400 pieces. The BU2032SM-HD-G is RoHS compliant for worldwide sales. Additionally, the LCP has excellent chemical resistance and can withstand repeated sterilizations by standard methods used in medical device assembly, including gamma and electron beam, ethylene oxide, and hot steam or hot air processes. The LCP used is also halogen-, PFOS-, and PFOA-free, as well as SVHC, REACH, RoHS, and WEEE compliant and meet global environmental regulations
Miniaturized Vertical Coin Cell HoldersMPD’s vertical battery holders offer the perfect solution for increasing component density in PC boards.
While most battery holders are horizontally mounted to reduce overall height, there are situations where maintaining a low profile is less important than maximizing available board real estate, as freeing up this space allows the PCB to be populated with more components, thus economizing on circuit board material. Vertical battery holders effectively minimize the footprint of coin cells, there is a natural trade-off, as the use of a vertical battery holder results in a higher profile. This trade-off is often acceptable for non-handheld devices, where miniaturization is not a primary concern, and increased component density enables more cost effective use of the circuit board material. In situations where a vertical coin cell is required, but maintaining the lowest possible profile is also necessary, a solution can be to drill small holes in the PCB, enabling part of the coin cell holder to sit at or below the surface of the PC board to reduce overall profile by up to 1cm. This space-saving concept is similarly employed by the Mini family of coin cell holders.
Narrow Profile Coin Cell Battery RetainersMPD's newest edition to the retainer family is a narrow profile version for 12.5 mm, 20.0 mm and 24.5 mm coin cell batteries.
Offering a much narrower width than other competing designs and weighting just 0.48 grams is just the beginning of its benefits. The very low-cost of the coin cell retainer straps make it particularly suitable for consumer products, single-use devices, RFID, and other price-sensitive applications.

MPD has invented another whole new category of coin cell battery holders called Minis, which drastically reduce the height of battery holders on PCBs. The first Mini being released is the BU2032SM-JJ-MINI-GTR, designed for use with CR2032 batteries. While other CR2032 holder solutions often rise almost 5 mm above the PCB, MPD's BU2032SM-JJ-MINI-GTR rises under 2 mm with an installed CR2032. This directly saves almost 3 mm in board height when compared to typical CR2032 battery holders available on the market.
