Shown here is a comparison of silicon-carbide versus other solutions. It shows the turnoff or reverse recovery comparison going from a conducting state to a non-conducting state of a silicon-carbide versus other solutions. It is faster than a bipolar or ultrafast device. This also illustrates the relatively smooth turnoff versus the snappiness of a bipolar device. STMicro’s tandem bipolar devices actually start to compete with silicon-carbide in terms of reverse recovery but even more on price. This shows an offline application of a 400 W power factor correction circuit with some specific conditions. It shows the overall power losses using a bipolar device, a couple generations of tandem bipolar devices and then a silicon-carbide. The lowest power losses are going to be in the solution that uses the silicon-carbide device. What that means is that in this particular circuit, the lack of switching losses in the diode is really translating to overall improvement in power supply efficiency.
